Roman villa and Bronze Age finds unearthed at Langport development
Before we start building new affordable homes in Langport, Abri’s team has been working with archaeologists to carry out some routine excavations, and what they’ve found is pretty incredible.
The site on Somerton Road has revealed remains of a Roman villa and even a Bronze Age roundhouse. These finds give us a fascinating glimpse into Somerset’s ancient past, showing that people were living and farming here thousands of years ago.
The Roman villa, which dates back to around the 1st to 3rd century AD, had six rooms, a corridor, and clever drainage systems. It looks like it was part of a larger farming estate, complete with grain storage pits, a barn, and a corn dryer.
We’re really proud to be part of preserving this history before we move forward with building up to 100 affordable homes for the community.
This work has been made possible thanks to a great partnership between Abri, Somerset Council, and the archaeological teams at TVAS and Armour Heritage. We’re working closely with archaeologists to preserve and document these incredible finds. It’s all part of making sure we respect and record the past while building for the future.
