Phishing scams: what to look out for

Phishing scams continue to be on the rise. They are often in the form of an email, SMS or WhatsApp message and aim to steal your identity, financial data, or business information, to commit fraud.

Some of our customers have recently reported receiving fraudulent text messages relating to “cost of living payments” and another to a “UK Home Office notification”. Both are phishing scams, encouraging the person to click on the link and give financial information. The DWP Counter Fraud Cyber team are aware and are working hard to shut these scams down.

Some of the things to look out for:

  • A message about a product or service you haven’t purchased or requested

  • Encouragement to click on an unknown link

  • A request for you to share personal and financial data

  • Messages sent outside normal business hours

  • A sense of urgency, with poor spelling and grammar

  • A message from an unidentified or unusual number

What to do if you suspect fraud

Don’t reply, click on any links or make any payments

Check if it’s genuine: contact the person or company directly, using a number you already have and know is correct

Report the message by forwarding it for free to 7726.
