From full-time parent to full-time employment: William’s story
In July 2022, I attended the Clewer Employment & Support Hub. I was helped to update my CV and begin exploring employment options including security work and warehousing.
In early 2023 I heard about the work that Abri’s Employment Services were doing for warehousing opportunities with DPD in Slough. Many of these roles were night work and that shift pattern worked well with my family commitments.
I was supported to undertake training including an introductory course to warehousing and logistics, and employability skills, which included being able to practice my interview skills during mock interviews. We also tweaked my CV so that I was ready to apply for a role as a Warehouse Operative. The training and mock interviews really helped me. They boosted my self-esteem which I needed, having not had an interview for some time.
The team kept in regular contact and supported me through the application and interview process, and I was delighted to a secure a role with DPD. And I’m still in regular contact with the team, and I know that they’re always on the end of the phone if I need anything.
The role at DPD has given me increased confidence and warehousing experience. I’m looking at ways I can expand my skills and the team are helping me with this.
Being in regular paid employment has made a huge difference to my life. As well as improving my confidence and sense of self-worth, it has helped financially. Universal Credit meant I had nothing left after paying the bills and buying the essentials. Working means I have a little bit left over which means I can afford to treat my family.
Abri’s Employment Services have helped me massively. They are always understanding, and their advice helped me prepare and look for work and pointed me in the right direction.
