Emergency alert test – what to expect

On Sunday 7 September at 3pm, mobile phones and tablets across the UK will receive a test alert from the government’s Emergency Alerts system. If your device uses 4G or 5G, it'll make a loud noise and vibrate for about ten seconds – even if it’s on silent. A message will appear on your screen to confirm it’s just a test.

Emergency alerts are designed to warn people quickly if there’s a danger to life nearby, such as flooding, fires, or severe weather. This test helps make sure the system works properly and that people know what to expect in a real emergency.

You don’t need to do anything when the alert sounds. And if you’re driving, please wait until it’s safe before checking your phone.

If you’re in a situation where receiving emergency alerts on your phone could cause distress or unwanted attention, you might want to explore how to turn them off. The government has provided guidance on how to do this. If you choose to opt out, you can access it here. Remember, this is entirely optional – alerts are designed to help keep people safe.
